The ancient walled city of Carcassonne is around 40 mins south-east.  The City is one of the best preserved medieval sites in Europe, and has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  During the summer jousting tournaments are frequently held between the ramparts.
The Cathars were deemed to be heretics and were persecuted by the Established Church in the Middle Ages.  There are numerous Cathar fortresses in the area, the most famous of which are Montsegur and Peyrepertuse.
Tennis is available near by to Les Boulbenes, with horse riding at the local equestrian centre and gliding can be arranged at Revel.

Pleasure boats can be hired on the picturesque Canal du Midi, which passes through Castelnaudary just 15 minutes to the south.
The Canal connects the Mediterranean with the Atlantic and dates from the 17th Century.  The tree-lined paths of the canal  are excellent for easy walking and cycling.  Some bicycles are available at the cottage for use by guests.
